ERO has been a trailblazer in custom-engineered electrical equipment since the early 1990s starting with Gunnar Nelson, the "Grandfather" of the modern reefer plug and power system design industry. Gunnar founded MIPCO, introducing a groundbreaking 32A receptacle that ensured secure electrical connections for refrigerated containers both at sea and onshore, earning him the prestigious US Patent 4521649 on June 4th, 1985.

Gunnar's dedication to innovation attracted the attention of T&B Russellstoll MIPCO (now ABB Installation Products), leading to the acquisition of his company. Undeterred, Gunnar reemerged in 1992, establishing ERO to fill a gap in the market for reliable and well-supported products. Collaborating with former attorney John Kantor, the duo propelled ERO to new heights. When John discovered his passion for the business he acquired ERO from Gunnar, steering it toward prosperity.

In 2020, with John's passing, the legacy was carried on through his daughter, Amy until it was acquired in 2023 by a group of investors with extensive experience in the electrical, mechanical and marine industries.
